While Dave Matthews Band put out a fantastic album in 2009 with Big Whiskey and The GrooGrux King, their new track could use a little more than the usual Dave Matthews Band sound. “Gaucho” starts off with some acoustic guitars and then drums come in and then some violin and horns and… you get the idea.
Dave Matthews seems to be stuck with “Gaucho”, using all the sounds that they’ve always worked with. The thing that really brings the track down are the lyrics with Matthews singing, “We got to do much more than believe if we want to see the world change”. Sure, looking for good lyrical content in a DMB song isn’t the point, but I didn’t expect it be that clunky.
Another thing that fails on “Gaucho” is the children that suddenly show up to sing the chorus in the second half. Most of the track seems too forced and bland to gather excitement. I can only hope that the rest of the album doesn’t go down like this.
