Frank Ocean’s appearance on Odd Future tapes have always been the highlight, and with his guest spot on Jay-Z and Kanye West’s Watch The Throne last year, Ocean is becoming the most recognizable member of Odd Future. He released a mixtape last year (although I still haven’t listened to it), and his debut album, Channel Orange, is out on July 17 on Def Jam records.
The second single from Channel Orange, “Sweet Life” (co-written with Pharrell) starts off with a bass line that sounds straight from a 70′s soul track and then some keyboards come in to brighten up the song. Horns burst on the chorus with Ocean singing “Why see the world/When you got the beach?”.
“Sweet Life” is a R&B gem that rarely shows up in today’s landscape. Ocean’s voice is great and he even goes for some Prince-styled vocals at one point. “Sweet Life” might be the first time I’ve ended up really loving anything from the Odd Future group, and has me anticipating the rest of Channel Orange.
