This new album by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Christopher Willis will not be for everyone. It’s not for very many people at all, really. Ancient Future consists of six songs that are very simple with their execution, but only if these songs are put on headphones do they shine. Sakamoto put together many of the piano parts, but most of this sounds like Willis’ creation. The ambient sounds that swirl through Ancient Future are quite bass heavy in the most natural way possible. The one thing that doesn’t really work on this album is how none of the tracks seem to work alongside one another. While the songs do blend together at times, it also comes across as a handful of sketches thrown together. The album might be too light and easy for some people, but giving Ancient Future a careful listen will pay off.
